CAPE
"The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people" — Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis
CAPE stands for Citizen Action for Political Education. It's the candidate portion of SEIU Local 503's political program. SEIU members contribute to CAPE so that the union can endorse pro-worker candidates at the state and national level who will move our issues forward.
In 2006, thanks to CAPE contributions, we were able to elect a pro-worker legislature and governor in Oregon that funded our contracts and created worker-friendly legislation.
Elected members form the CAPE Committee, which endorses candidates based on their answers to questionnaires and personal interviews. The decision comes down to which one will best represent workers in Oregon.
With the CAPE Committee's endorsement process, the candidate receives campaign funds and union volunteers who knock on doors and make phone calls to get the message out to voters.
CAPE is our way to make sure that worker-friendly candidates have the people power and resources they need to become pro-worker politicians. This is how we can achieve victories for working families in Oregon.
