Hardship Leave Requests

Hardship requests are an opportunity to help fellow classified employees who have used up all their sick leave and vacation leave and require additional time due to a personal health issue or time to devote to a family member's health issue.

In 2006, more than 1,000 hours were donated to our members in need.

"I'd like to send a message out to thank the people who have donated leave time to members like myself in need of time off for personal health reasons. I'm sure all of us who have received leave time from others, really appreciate the time and effort and generosity of their gift."
—Peggy Mullett, Academic Advising, Department of Crop and Soil Science

How can I help?
By donating some of your vacation time or comp time. You need to fill out a Hardship Leave Request form (see below) and send it to Jennifer Short at OSU-Human Resources, 204 Kerr Admin. Bldg., 737-8301. If you have questions, please call or e-mail Deborah Dombrowski at 737-7327.

You can get the one-page form Donate Leave (Hardship Request) from the OSU OSCAR website at https://oscar.oregonstate.edu/. Click Enter, then under Online tasks, select Employee Leave. Then click on Donate Leave (Hardship Request)  under Acrobat, fill out the form in Acrobat and print, sign the form, and send it to Jennifer Short.

And don't forget — if you have to be off work for medical reasons for yourself or for your family, and you meet the stipulations of the contract, you, too, can apply for hardship leave.

For further application details, see Article 40-Sick Leave, Sect. 8 Hardship Leave, on page 47 of the printed contract or see the online OUS contract pdf link on the Local 083 home page. Also, remember that FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) rights protect your job and your health insurance coverage while you are out — check with Tracey Coats, OSU's Benefits Coordinator, at 737-5946, for details.

How can I have the union send
a Hardship Request to OSU classifieds?
The first thing you do is contact Deborah Dombrowski, 737-7327; or Larry Bulling, 737-9889. They will confirm that you have an account set up to receive the donated leave. Then the e-mail can be sent out to all classifieds.
