Hardship Leave Requests

Hardship requests are an opportunity to help fellow classified employees who have used up all their sick leave and vacation leave and require additional time due to a personal health issue or time to devote to a family member’s health issue.

“I’d like to send a message out to thank the people who have donated leave time to members like myself in need of time off for personal health reasons. I’m sure all of us who have received leave time from others, really appreciate the time and effort and generosity of their gift.”
—Peggy Mullett, Retired

How can I help?

By donating some of your vacation time or comp time. You need to fill out a Donate Leave(Hardship Leave) form (see below).  If you have questions, please call or e-mail Siobhan Burke at burkes@seiu503.org  The Donate Leave (Hardship Request) form is on the OSU website at http://oregonstate.edu/admin/hristeam/hardship.pdf.

And don’t forget — if you have to be off work for medical reasons for yourself or for your family, and you meet the stipulations of the contract, you, too, can apply for hardship leave.

For further application details, see Article 40-Sick Leave, Sect. 8 Hardship Leave, on page 42 of the printed contract (effective through June 30, 2019) or see the contract on the SEIU Local 503 website. Also, remember that FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) rights protect your job and your health insurance coverage while you are out — check with the OSU Employee Benefits Office at 541-737-2805 (employee.benefits@oregonstate.edu), for details.

How can I get hardship leave?

Refer to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement – See Article 40-Sick Leave, Sect. 8 Hardship Leave, on page 56 of the printed contract (effective through June 30, 2019) or see the contract on the SEIU Local 503 website.   Contact Human Resources to get assistance in setting up Hardship Leave [Jennifer Short (jennifer.short@oregonstate.edu) or call 541-737-3609].

OFLA/FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) rights protect your job and your health insurance coverage while you are out — check with the OSU Employee Benefits Office at 541-737-2805 (employee.benefits@oregonstate.edu), for details and your eligibility determination.  If you are going to go into LWOP, you will likely need to utilize the hardship request. Under FMLA/OFLA you can put aside 40 hours of vacation if you request to do so in writing before the leave starts.
