Hardship Leave Requests

Hardship requests are an opportunity to help fellow classified employees who have used up all their sick leave and vacation leave and require additional time due to a personal health issue or time to devote to a family member’s health issue.

“I’d like to send a message out to thank the people who have donated leave time to members like myself in need of time off for personal health reasons. I’m sure all of us who have received leave time from others, really appreciate the time and effort and generosity of their gift.”
—Peggy Mullett, Retired

How can I help?

By donating some of your vacation time or comp time. You need to fill out a Donate Leave(Hardship Leave) form (see below) and send it to Jennifer Short at OSU-Human Resources, 122 Kerr Admin. Bldg., 541-737-3609. If you have questions, please call or e-mail Mike Coutley, 920-639-2166 or Mimi Khalili, 503-581-1505 Ext 142.  The Donate Leave (Hardship Request) form is on the OSU website at http://oregonstate.edu/admin/hristeam/hardship.pdf. Fill out the form, print it, sign it, and send it to Jennifer Short in HR at 122 Kerr Administration Bldg.

And don’t forget — if you have to be off work for medical reasons for yourself or for your family, and you meet the stipulations of the contract, you, too, can apply for hardship leave.

For further application details, see Article 40-Sick Leave, Sect. 8 Hardship Leave, on page 42 of the printed contract (effective through June 30, 2019) or see the contract on the SEIU Local 503 website. Also, remember that FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) rights protect your job and your health insurance coverage while you are out — check with the OSU Employee Benefits Office at 541-737-2805 (employee.benefits@oregonstate.edu), for details.

How can I get hardship leave?

Refer to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement – See Article 40-Sick Leave, Sect. 8 Hardship Leave, on page 56 of the printed contract (effective through June 30, 2019) or see the contract on the SEIU Local 503 website.   Contact Human Resources to get assistance in setting up Hardship Leave [Jennifer Short (jennifer.short@oregonstate.edu) or call 541-737-3609].

Also, remember that FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) rights protect your job and your health insurance coverage while you are out — check with the OSU Employee Benefits Office at 541-737-2805 (employee.benefits@oregonstate.edu), for details and your eligibility determination.  If you do not qualify for hardship leave for some reason, you may still qualify for FMLA.

How can I have the union send a Hardship Request to OSU classifieds?

Human Resources notifies Local 083 when someone has requested, and is qualified for, receiving Hardship donations from members.  When Human Resources notifies the Local President and Mike Coutley (920-639-2166), coutleym@seiu503.org, Mike sends out the request.  Occasionally, a member asks for help more than once.  If you have been told by Human Resources that hardship donations are approved, and you do not see an announcement/request to members within a few days, please notify Mike so that he can trace the problem.
